Soul Midwife

Honouring Life, Guiding the Journey

What Is a Soul Midwife?

A Soul Midwife is a compassionate companion, walking alongside those who are dying and their loved ones. At the heart of this work is the ancient and sacred art of tending to the threshold between life and death. Offering comfort, calm, and companionship as each soul journeys toward peace.

The term Soul Midwife feels deeply aligned with who I am. You may also hear it referred to as Death Doula, End-of-Life Practitioner, or in more ancient traditions Psychopomp.

This support is not medical or religious, but deeply human. It honours the emotional, spiritual, and practical needs of both the person who is dying and those who love them.

Whether at home, in hospice, or in hospital, they offer a steady, compassionate presence - holding space, listening deeply, and helping to create moments of meaning and rest.

Extract from School of Soul Midwives website:

"Soul Midwives are helping to transform the personal and collective experience of dying and living within the community, supporting anyone facing the end of life to experience a tender, peaceful, and conscious death."

  • Creating sacred space using sacred oils, sound, music, and ceremony.

  • Emotional support for fear, anxiety, or unfinished conversations.

  • Guidance and calm reassurance for families and loved ones.

  • Gentle support for anticipatory (pre-death) grief and emotional release.

Testimonial:
“Ruth’s guidance around the stages of my mum’s dying process was deeply comforting.
Her knowledge of the elements withdrawing (earth, water, fire, and air) helped me understand what was truly happening in those final days.
Ruth’s support allowed me to sit peacefully by my mum’s bedside rather than feel anxious or afraid.”

My Calling:
Why I Became a Soul Midwife...

My journey as a Soul Midwife began at my mum’s bedside.

I was called to this work during the final weeks of my dear mum’s life. She passed while I was completing my yoga teacher training - a time already rich with transformation. Sitting with her as she prepared to leave this world, I felt a quiet but powerful calling rise within me: to walk with others through this sacred threshold.

My mum had been a midwife herself, guiding countless souls into life. In her final days, I held her hands and said,

“Wow Mum, I wonder how many souls your hands have brought into this world?”
She smiled, full of contentment at the recognition.

During those precious weeks, she often said, “I’ve had a great life, and now it’s time to go.” Her peaceful acceptance was a profound gift - showing me that death, when met with love and presence, can be as sacred and natural as birth itself.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that my own calling emerged as hers came to rest - she had welcomed souls into the world, and now I walk with them as they prepare to leave.

Now, as I accompany others through the soul’s journey at the end of life, I feel the deep roots of ancestral connection. Supporting people as they cross this sacred threshold feels not only like a calling, but like coming home.

Every experience reminds me that dying well is a continuation of living well - both grounded in love, honesty, and presence.

Cathy Chiplen, School of Soul Midwives

“Ruth holds space with rare depth and presence remaining calm, compassionate, and deeply attuned. She has a profound ability to honour the stillness, allowing others to reflect, feel, and process at their own pace. Her work is grounded, sensitive, and spiritually rooted. A true gift to those she serves.”

“If you or a loved one is approaching a sacred threshold, you don’t have to navigate it alone.”
